Yes, Shell does take Apple Pay as a payment method.
Shell's support for Apple Pay is way more convenient than how you'd expect a gas station to accept mobile wallets for payments.
That said, Shell offers a mobile fuel payment service called Pay at Pump, available in the Shell app, which allows customers to pay for their gas at the pump through supported mobile wallets, including Apple Pay.
In this guide, I'll show you how to set up Apple Pay and use it through the Shell app to pay for your gas.
How to Set Up Apple Pay to Use at Shell
If you're using an Apple Pay-supported device (that is, at least iPhone 6 or newer), then you should already have the mobile wallet pre-installed on your phone through the Wallet app.
All you'll need is a supported payment card (credit or debit card) to activate Apple Pay from your Wallet.
After you've gotten your payment card, you can set up Apple Pay as follows:
- Open the Wallet app and tap the plus button.
- Select "Debit or Credit Card", then tap the "Continue" button.
- Now, you'll need to link your card either automatically (by scanning with iSight) or manually by entering the card details in the required field.
- After you're done entering your card details, just follow the remaining instructions to complete the process.
The entire setup process should take just a few minutes if your card doesn't complicate the process or require additional verification. Even if it does, you'll have to complete the verification to set up your Wallet because that's our aim here.
How To Use Apple Pay At Shell
Now that we have Apple Pay ready, it should be easy to use it for gas refills at Shell stations.
You'll, however, find out that the steps we'll be using here are completely different from that we covered when looking to use Apple Pay at gas stations like ARCO or even at Costco, because everything starts in the Shell app and finishes still in the Shell app.
That said, to use Apple Pay at Shell gas stations:
- Open the Shell app.
- Enter and confirm the pump number from the comfort of your vehicle
- Select Apple Pay and follow the prompts.
- Wait for the "Start Fuelling" message to appear.
- Then Fill Up with fuel and drive off. It really is as simple as that.
